Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP)

The Del Norte County Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) is funded by the California Tobacco Tax Initiative (Prop 99) and the Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act (Prop 56) with program oversight provided by the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). The overall goal of the program is to reduce involuntary exposure to second-hand smoke and to provide outreach and education to the public on the harms of tobacco use.

The program obtains its local objectives from community members and then studies and surveys local tobacco trends to assist in local policy development. Current objectives  include:

  • Facilitating the establishment of smoke-free apartment communities
  • Limiting tobacco promoting influences
  • Limiting the location of where one can use and obtain tobacco products
  • Promoting cessation services

Numerous organizations have adopted smoke-free/tobacco-free policies throughout Del Norte County, such as the smoke-free multiunit housing ordinances which protect tenants in multi unit dwellings from exposure to secondhand and thirdhand smoke exposure. Through policies like the smoke-free multiunit housing ordinances and the tobacco retail license ordinances, Del Norte County is making its way to becoming a healthier and more tobacco-free community.
